WhatsApp button on mobile: size, position and thumb-friendly design

Most people tap a WhatsApp button with one thumb while standing, walking or waiting in line. A WhatsApp button on mobile has to be big enough to hit, placed where the thumb reaches and clear enough to read at a glance.

Why does mobile design matter for a WhatsApp button?

WhatsApp is a phone app, so the people who click your button are mostly on phones already. The tap takes them from your page straight into a chat. If the button is tiny, hidden by a banner or too close to another link, they miss it, get annoyed and leave.

Before you change anything, look at your own numbers. In the WhatsClicks Resumo tab, the Aparelho section shows how many clicks come from phones, tablets and computers. If phones are the large majority on your site, mobile design is the first thing to fix.

How big should the button be?

A fingertip is much wider than a mouse pointer. As a practical rule, make the tappable area at least about the size of a thumb pad, roughly 44 to 48 pixels high, and leave empty space around it. The visible text can be smaller than the area you can tap, as long as the whole block responds.

Width matters too. A button that spans most of the screen width in a product page is easier to hit than a small round icon. For a floating button, a circle or pill large enough to see without zooming is a good start.

  • Height of about 44 to 48 pixels or more.
  • Space between the button and other links, so a thumb does not hit the wrong one.
  • Text large enough to read without zooming.
  • Enough padding inside so the label does not touch the edges.

These sizes are common design guidelines, not a rule of WhatsApp. Test on your own phone, and ask a friend with larger hands to try too.

Where should the button go on a phone screen?

Think about how people hold a phone. Most use the right thumb, and the easiest area to reach is the lower half of the screen, near the bottom right. The top corners are the hardest. That is why floating buttons usually sit in the lower corner.

A floating button stays visible while the visitor scrolls, which is useful on long pages. An inline button inside the content works well after a paragraph that answers a question. Many sites use both: one floating and one near the main offer. If you want to know which is better on your site, tag them with different names in the link and compare in Por botão.

  1. Pick one position near the lower corner for the floating button.
  2. Add one inline button after the most important section.
  3. Give each button its own name with src, such as src=floating and src=middle.
  4. After a week, check Por botão in the Resumo tab.

How do you avoid overlapping other elements?

The most common mobile problem is overlap. A cookie banner, a chat widget or a bottom menu can cover the button. Open your page on a real phone and scroll to the bottom. Is the button still visible and tappable? Rotate the phone too, since landscape mode often shifts things.

Also check that the button does not hide text the visitor needs to read, such as a price or a form field. If it does, move it a bit higher or reduce its size on small screens.

Test with the on-screen keyboard open. Some pages push floating buttons up and over the form field.

Color, contrast and label

Green is the color people associate with WhatsApp, so it works well, but contrast with your page background matters more than the exact shade. If your page is light green already, choose a darker green or add a border. A short label such as "Chat on WhatsApp" beats an icon alone, because a word explains what will happen.

Keep the label on one line. If it wraps to two or three lines on a small phone, shorten it. You can also test the wording by tagging buttons with different names in the WhatsClicks link.

How do you check that it works?

Create the link in WhatsClicks, paste it as the button address and tap it on your own phone. You should land in a WhatsApp chat with your number and your starting message. Your own click counts in the panel, so do not be surprised to see it there.

After a few days, open the Resumo tab and look at Aparelho and Por botão. For a simple example, if a sample of 100 clicks shows 85 from phones, you know your mobile design deserves most of your attention. The counter measures clicks, not conversations or sales, so also compare with the chats you actually receive.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a WhatsApp button be on mobile?

Aim for a tappable area of roughly 44 to 48 pixels high or more, with space around it. This is a common design guideline, so test on your own phone.

Where is the best place for a WhatsApp button on a phone?

The lower half of the screen, near the bottom right for right-handed users, is the easiest area for a thumb. Many sites use a floating button there.

How do I know if my visitors click on phones or computers?

In the WhatsClicks Resumo tab, the Aparelho section shows clicks by phone, tablet and computer.

Does a floating button annoy mobile visitors?

It can if it covers content. Keep it small enough, check it with banners and the keyboard, and compare clicks to see whether it helps.
