How to add a WhatsApp button to WordPress

Adding a WhatsApp button to WordPress takes a few minutes, and you can do it two ways: with a plugin or with a regular button from the editor. What matters most is using a link that also counts the clicks.

What is the easiest way to add a WhatsApp button to WordPress?

WordPress lets you create a WhatsApp button in three ways: with a ready-made plugin, with the button block built into the editor, or by pasting a small piece of code into your theme. If you do not code, the first two are the safest.

In every case, the button is just a pretty link. What it actually does depends on the address you put in it. So before you think about how the button looks, decide which address you are going to use.

Menu and screen names in WordPress can vary depending on the version and the theme. The steps below are generic on purpose.

Which address should the button use: wa.me or a link that counts clicks?

The best-known address is wa.me, which opens the chat straight in WhatsApp. It works well, but it has one problem: you have no idea how many people clicked. Neither WordPress nor WhatsApp shows you that number on its own.

The alternative is a WhatsClicks link. You save your number and a starting message in the dashboard, and it generates an address like the example below. When someone clicks, they are taken straight to the WhatsApp chat and the click is recorded.

  • Before (only opens WhatsApp, no counting): https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hi
  • After (opens WhatsApp and counts the click): https://whatsclicks.com/w/abc123

The number 15551234567 and the code abc123 are examples. In the dashboard you will see your real link.

How to add the button with the editor block, step by step

If your WordPress uses the block editor, you do not need to install anything. This is the lightest route, because it adds no extra weight to your site.

  1. Create your free WhatsClicks account, save your WhatsApp number and write the starting message.
  2. Copy the generated link, which looks like https://whatsclicks.com/w/code.
  3. In WordPress, open the page where the button should appear and switch to edit mode.
  4. Add a button block where you want it and type the text, for example: Chat on WhatsApp.
  5. Select the button, look for the link field and paste the WhatsClicks address.
  6. Save or update the page and open your site in another tab to test the click.

If you cannot find the link field by that name, look for something similar, like URL or address. The name can vary depending on the version.

What if I already have a WhatsApp button plugin installed?

Many sites already have a plugin that shows a floating button in the corner of the screen. You do not need to remove it. Almost all of them have a field for the phone number or for the destination link.

Open the plugin settings and check whether there is a custom link field. If there is, paste the WhatsClicks link there. If the plugin only accepts a phone number, it will build the wa.me address by itself and will not count clicks. In that case, one way out is to use the editor button block, as in the previous steps, or to switch to another plugin that accepts a free link.

  • Plugin with a free link field: paste the WhatsClicks link.
  • Plugin that only asks for the number: it does not count clicks, so use the editor button instead.
  • Button inside a page builder: the link field works the same way.

How do I know which WordPress page and button get the most clicks?

If the same link is used in several places, the dashboard shows the total but does not say where each click came from. To tell them apart, you can tag the link. Two simple tags make the difference: ?p= tells which page and &src= tells which button.

Here is an example for the button at the top of the contact page and another for the fixed button in the blog footer:

  • https://whatsclicks.com/w/abc123?p=/blog&src=footer

Below each link in the dashboard there is an address generator that builds these tags for you. You can also change the starting message with &t=, for example to say the person came from a specific page.

What should I check after publishing the button?

Run a full test. Click the button on your phone and confirm the chat opens with the right number and message. Then open the WhatsClicks dashboard and check that the click showed up in the Summary tab, in the by page and by button tables.

Remember that the counter measures clicks on the button, not closed conversations or sales. Your own clicks count too, so do not be surprised if the first record is your test. If you ever need to change your number, just edit the link in the dashboard: every WordPress button that uses that link will open the new number, with no changes to the site.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a plugin to add a WhatsApp button to WordPress?

No. The editor button block is enough: just paste the link into the address field. Plugins only make floating buttons and visual effects easier.

Does a WordPress WhatsApp button count clicks by itself?

Usually not. A wa.me link only opens the chat. To count clicks, use a counter link, like the one from WhatsClicks, instead of wa.me.

Can I use the same link on several buttons on my site?

Yes. To know which button produced each click, add &src= with a different name on each one, for example &src=top and &src=footer.
