How to count how many clicks your WhatsApp button gets

To count WhatsApp button clicks, the simplest route is to swap the button's link for a link that records every click before opening the chat. This guide shows how it works, what you can measure and how to start today.

Why does the WhatsApp button usually go unmeasured?

When you add a WhatsApp button to your website, it normally points straight to a WhatsApp address, something like wa.me followed by your number. The visitor leaves your site and lands in the app. At that moment nothing is recorded on your side: you cannot tell whether the button was clicked ten times or ten thousand.

That is a problem because WhatsApp has become the main contact channel for many businesses. If you run ads, publish content or change your site layout, you need to know whether it is bringing more people who want to talk. Without a click count, every decision is a guess.

How does a WhatsApp click counter work?

The idea is to add one quick step in the middle. Instead of opening WhatsApp directly, the button opens a counter link. The counter records the click and immediately sends the person to the chat with your number. For the visitor it feels the same as always. For you, a number now exists.

With WhatsClicks the process is this: you register your WhatsApp number and a first message, and the dashboard generates a link shaped like https://whatsclicks.com/w/code. That link goes in place of the old button address.

A click counter measures clicks on the button, not closed conversations or sales. It is a number of interest, and it already helps a lot.

Step by step: start counting your WhatsApp clicks

  1. Create a free WhatsClicks account. No card is needed to start.
  2. In the Links area, create a new link with your WhatsApp number and the message that will appear ready-made in the chat, for example: Hi, I found you on your website and I would like to know more.
  3. Copy the generated link, the one that starts with https://whatsclicks.com/w/.
  4. Open your website editor, select the WhatsApp button and look for the link or URL field. The menu name may vary depending on the version of your tool.
  5. Delete the old address, paste the WhatsClicks link and save or publish the page.
  6. Click the button yourself in a browser tab to test it. The chat should open with the ready message, and the click shows up in the dashboard.

The site owner's own clicks are counted too, so after testing, remember that your first number already includes your own click.

What will you see in the dashboard?

On the Summary tab, the dashboard shows clicks and unique visitors for the period you choose, from today up to three years. It compares with the previous period using a green arrow if it went up and a red one if it went down, in percent.

You also get plain sentences with the best hour, the best day of the week, the most clicked page and the most clicked button. There is a chart of clicks per day and a split between phone, tablet and computer.

  • How many clicks the button got today, yesterday, this week or this month.
  • Which page and which button the clicks came from, if you tag them in the link.
  • At what times and on which days people look for your WhatsApp the most.
  • Whether clicks are growing or shrinking compared with the previous period.

How can you tell which button or page gets the most clicks?

If your site has several buttons that all use the same link, the counter adds everything together and you cannot tell which one works best. The fix is to tag the link. You can add ?p=/page to say which page the button is on and &src=top to name the button, for example.

A practical example: the top button on your pricing page gets ?p=/pricing&src=top, and the footer button gets ?p=/pricing&src=footer. After a few days, the By page and By button tables show which position gets more clicks. Under each link in the dashboard there is an address builder that creates these tags for you, so you do not need to memorize anything.

What a WhatsApp click counter does not do

It is important to keep expectations realistic. WhatsClicks counts clicks on the WhatsApp button. It does not show who clicked, it does not measure visitors who saw the button and did not click, and it does not follow whether a chat ended in a sale. It is not a replacement for a CRM either.

WhatsApp does not hand the phone number of the person who clicks to anyone. You only see the number when the person actually sends the first message. Search engine crawlers and known bots are left out of the count, which keeps the number closer to reality.

A useful way to read the data is to compare it with what you already know. For example, if in one week the button got 200 clicks and you received 20 new chats, you have a clue about how many clicks become conversations. Those numbers are only an example, yours will be different.

How long does it take to set up, and what does it cost to try?

Sign-up is free, with no card needed to start, and it includes a 3-day free trial with up to 2 links. After the trial there are paid plans with more links, and you can cancel in one click from your account. For most websites, creating the link and swapping the button takes just a few minutes.
